Windwalker's Window to the Island - A Nantucket Real Estate Blog

Washington, July 01, 2010 (Realtor.org) The National Association of Realtors® today commended Congress for timely passage of two bills to extend the homebuyer tax credit closing deadline and reauthorize the National Flood Insurance Program. Both bills, strongly supported by NAR, had cleared the House earlier and were passed by the Senate last night. They now head to the president for his signature. This is great news for those considering Nantucket homes for sale.

The big news is that as of today, July 2nd, Great Point is open again-Coatue is still closed.

Unlike news from the stock market, the Nantucket Fishing report continues to be positive. Striped Bass are being caught all around the Island from shore, in the rips, and on the Flats. The South Shore beaches have been more conducive to Surfing than fishing the past few days so wily anglers have been moving to more protected spots and have been catching fish.

Although the news could change any day now, Bluefishing continues to be spotty. We have been spoiled in recent years by hoards of Bluefish in late June near Nantucket real estate. They are here now, but relatively scarce. There are reports of Squid in Nantucket harbor. This is good news because they are fun to catch and should draw the Bass and Bluefish into the harbor waters.

The weather forecast for the holiday weekend is excellent.  Check with your local Tackle Shop or favorite Charter Captain for the latest information and get out there!

quint stock photos 018July 4th falls on a Sunday this year so Nantucket will host most of their activities on July 3rd.  Be sure to come to Main Street for pie and watermelon eating contests, face painting, a  dunk tank to cool you off and of course the annual water fight at high noon-this is a water fight like none other and is not to be missed!

The fireworks will be launched from a barge off of Jetties Beach at 9 pm on Sunday the 4th-weather permitting. This is the perfect way to end your holiday weekend.  Be sure to tear yourself from your Nantucket vacation rental early to go to Jetties to stake your claim on a good spot on the beach for watching the fireworks.  Happy Fourth!

Excited beach fishermen are reporting excellent Striped Bass fishing all over Nantucket Island. In fact, the in-shore Bass fishing may be reaching its peak until the water begins to cool off again in the fall. The South Shore beaches continue to be hot with many points and holes still in place to attract feeding Stripers. The flats on the West End of the island and off the Northern Beaches have also been producing good results. Folks trying to get out of the wind have been doing well at night on the East side and fishermen venturing out to Great Point are beginning to be rewarded for their efforts. Bass are definitely being caught in the harbor although they do not seem to be feeding nearly as aggressively as elsewhere around the island. There have been reports of Bass over 40” being taken from shore.

Bluefish are being taken as well but the big story continues to be the Bass.

Get out to your Nantucket Beach House and enjoy this great fishing!

sacred momentsNantucket summer rentals spark the interest of things to do in Nantucket. One of my daughter’s favorite teachers from her boarding school was planning an August trip to Nantucket with his young family. He asked her for a list of “non-touristy” things to do on the Island.  At first, my daughter was feeling the weight of responsibility and was perhaps concerned that her ideas might make or break her revered faculty member’s vacation.  But after our whole family weighed in, the list was proclaimed “the most awesome list ever” by her teacher.

The truth is that exploring Nantucket is as individual and unique an experience as the island itself.  Indeed, for Mr. K’s family, our list will be merely a starting point. Perhaps they’ll go crabbing at Long Pond, visit Cisco Brewery for a picnic and some live music, discover peaceful uncrowded beaches, have lunch on the deck at Miacomet Golf Club, or walk the tiny streets of ‘Sconset with an ice cream cone. But somehow I know they will discover sacred places and create memories all their own.  That’s the magic that is Nantucket.

“Where are all the Bluefish”? At the moment this question is the one most Nantucket anglers seem to be asking each other. Although a 9-pounder won a recent local  Nantucket fishing tournament, Bluefish have been hard to find. The Charter Boats have been finding some off Sankaty and the Eastern end of the Island. There was also a gaggle of boats concentrated in a traditional early season Bluefish spot off Madequecham last weekend. Another clue that Bluefish are around is the increasing frequency with which Bass fisherman are pulling in plastic baits that have been neatly bitten off right behind the hook. This situation gets expensive and is locally referred to as a “Cigar Butt”!

Bass fishermen continue to report good results all around the Island. A charter boat has been trolling for Bass in Nantucket Harbor and they are doing well off Sankaty and in other spots off the Eastern end of the Island. Fly fishermen are having success in Nantucket Harbor and in calm water fishing from  leeward shores. The Striped Bass are still feeding in close to the Island with best results now being reported during periods of low light. We have not heard much about the fishing at Great Point. Fishermen seem to be going elsewhere because so many of the good spots at the Point and Coatue are closed at the present time.

100_2781The Striped bass fishing on Nantucket continues to be good, just in time for your Nantucket summer rental! The bass are feeding aggressively near shore and are getting bigger. Many fish have been caught in the 33’” range and there was a report of a 38” Bass caught in Nantucket Harbor.

When the surf and wind conditions permit, the South Shore beaches from Madaket to Tom Nevers have been productive. Some nice catches have also been reported on the North shore from Dionis up to the Jetties.

Nantucket Harbor is also beginning to heat up. The Bass that many have seen are now starting to bite. There have also been reports of  Striped Bass on the East end of the Island.

Dionis and Nantucket Harbor are good places to fish if you are looking for Bluefish. They are showing up all around the Island and should become even more established in the next few weeks as the water continues to warm up.

Great Point is now closed from the southern end of the Galls up to the Point due to nesting Piping Plovers. There have been a few small bass caught along the East side. As always, when you  move into your Nantucket summer house, be sure to check in with any of the local Nantucket Tackle Shops or your favorite Charter Boat Captain for the latest details about fishing on Nantucket.

The Wine Festival revelers have now left Nantucket and the migratory Striped Bass have arrived. From all reports, the Stripers are now all around the Island and are being caught from Madaket to Quidnet. When the surf conditions allow, Beach fisherman have had good luck from the South Shore. Anglers on the North Shore are beginning to report respectable catches as well. It is still not necessary to fish at night to hook up but lower light conditions in the morning and the evening seem to be the most productive. As is often the case at this time of year, smaller size swimmers and plastics are the lures of choice. The Bass are already starting to get bigger with most catches ranging from 27 inches to 33 inches.

For Boat fisherman, Nantucket Harbor seems to be the place. There are definitely Bass in the harbor but the fishing is not yet as consistent as it will be in a few weeks. There are also a few Bluefish starting to arrive.

Speaking of Bluefish, they are also being caught in the Dionis area. Smith’s Point, which is now open to Beach driving further out, is another productive early season spot for Bluefish.

For those anglers interested in bottom fishing, Scup (Porgies) and Sea Bass are reportedly being caught out by the Jetties.

Check in with any one of the local Tackle Shops Bill Fisher Tackle , Cross Rip Outfitters, or Nantucket Tackle Center or ask one of the Charter Boat Captains for more details….
